A challenge for you

This is a cutting from yesterday’s Metro. I challenge you to read it once (without prior knowledge of the story) and understand it. It took me three tries, and some collaboration. Just me?

Running in the family

Proof that loserdom is rife in the Relf/Mezulis clan. An email from my stepfather:
Cathy,

this amused me…

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/mar/11/teenager-survives-golden-gate-jump

It contains these sentences…

Someone leaps off the bridge an average of once every two weeks – last year, 32 people died. About 98% of those plunges prove fatal and authorities rule most of the deaths to be suicides.

only 98% of those who died were fatal!

D
Primed as I was for finding mistakes, the first time I read this I also pictured one individual who persistently jumps off the bridge once every week or two. Then climbs up, goes home, does it again a fortnight later. I think I was imagining that one, though, to be fair.

Brighton subbed to Brighten

Here’s one in the eye for all those nasty newspapers who have got rid of their in-house subs and switched to (cheaper) subbing hubs. If it had been subbed locally or on-site, “Brighton” would have been in the dictionary and therefore wouldn’t have been flagged up when some silly sod used a spellchecker. For shame!

The story is here, on Journalism.co.uk.

My mum has been pinching and scanning notices from her gym again. I do hope she takes care if she goes to sign up for these – the location sounds rather precarious.

How many typos can you fit on a flyer?

Mmm, yummy

Yep, that’s right. This is the kind of holiday snap I take! In response to an article on Guardian.co.uk about bad menu writing. I think we can let these folks off though, what with them being Japanese and all.

Ian Hislop’s doing what?

When a wacky title goes horribly wrong. Did no-one think through the possible interpretations of a programme clever-dickily entitled Ian Hislop’s Scouting for Boys? My goodness.

How they do it in Mayo

Filed under: oops!,sex offender party — substuff @ 8:14 am

Whoa! I guess they have a different attitude to dealing with sex offenders in Mayo. Give ’em a party and a trophy and send ’em on their way…

Thanks to @badjournalism on Twitter for this.

Sir Sean unveils a plague

It’s so easy to skim over those pesky link descriptions when you’re editing the web bits and bobs, as the BBC discovered today. It seems Sir Sean Connery has been spreading disease. Well, what else would you expect from someone born in the street…?

Read the full story (with the now corrected link) here.
